Smoothies have not only taken over social media in recent times, but have also become an integral part of everyday life for many of us. The most popular drinks are green and blue, which owe their eye-catching colors to algae. What can these inconspicuous plants offer us?

Although it is difficult to find algae in traditional Polish cuisine, they are becoming increasingly popular among lovers of healthy eating. All thanks to a number of benefits that are associated with their consumption. Seaweeds contain almost all ingredients necessary for the proper functioning of the human body: sodium, calcium, potassium, chlorine, sulfur, phosphorus, iodine, fluorine, selenium, copper, manganese, iron, vitamins (C, B group, E, beta-carotene, folic acid) and high-quality protein. This makes them an invaluable addition to a balanced diet.

Blue-green algae are also used when making appetizing smoothies and smoothie bowls. The two most popular varieties – chlorella and spirulina – are by far the most popular in this field. Despite many similarities and common health-promoting properties, they also share a few significant differences. Is it possible to unequivocally determine which of them will turn out to be better for us?

Green and blue seaweeds differ already on the cellular level. While chlorella has a spherical form, spirulina – as the name suggests – has a spiral one. The most important difference, however, is the content of both algae. Only chlorella provides us with vitamin A, phosphorus and fiber. The domain of spirulina are vitamins E and K and protein. Regardless of which one we will reach for, we can be sure that it will benefit our health!
